The Richmond Theatre Critics Circle (RTCC) has announced nominations for the Seventh Annual RTCC “Artsies" Awards for the 2013-14 season.

The Richmond Theatre Critics Circle (RTCC) has announced nominations for the Seventh Annual RTCC “Artsies” Awards for the 2013-14 season, an event that celebrates achievement in local professional theater and raises money for the Richmond Theater Artists Fund.

The Circle will host a black-tie awards gala at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, at Virginia Repertory Theatre’s Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre. It will feature musical performances from productions nominated for Best Musical as well as an original song penned by the masters of ceremonies for the event, local actors Debra Clinton and Jason Marks.

“We have expanded our usual slate of awards to include a new category, Most Promising Newcomer,” said David Timberline, this year’s event chair and a theater critic for Style Weekly magazine. “This award will recognize the efforts of young performers and encourage them to continue to hone their skills.” The RTCC has chosen the Acts of Faith festival, the largest faith-based theater festival in the United States, as the recipient of the annual Liz Marks Memorial Award for its ongoing contributions to Richmond-area theater. The festival celebrated its 10 anniversary this past season.

All proceeds from ticket sales will support the Richmond Theatre Artists Fund, which was established to help those in the Richmond theater community who have fallen on hard times from illness, injury or extenuating circumstances.

Event emcees Clinton and Marks have been mainstays in the local theater community for years and have collaborated on the development of original musical works for the School for the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community. Both have been honored by Richmond Magazine with Theresa Pollak Prizes for Excellence in the Arts.

In addition to Timberline, the members of the RTCC that voted on the nominations include Rich Griset (Style Weekly), Julinda Lewis (Richmond Times-Dispatch), Bruce Levy (Show Biz Radio), and a recent addition to the Circle, Jerry Williams (TVJerry.com / WRIR). Non-voting members of the organization of local theater critics include Tony Farrell (Richmond Times-Dispatch), Liz Jewett (Richmond.com), Jen Maciulewicz (GayRVA.com), Matt Miller (GayRVA.com), John Porter (WCVE-FM) and Joan Tupponce (One Woman’s View). Circle members must have seen at least two-thirds of the locally-produced shows during the last season in order to vote.

Formal attire is encouraged for the awards ceremony, which is open to the public. Tickets for the event are $15 and can be purchased from Virginia Rep at va-rep.org or 282-2620.

A group of Richmond's young and up and coming artists have announced they are opening their own theater.

Bucking recent economic trends, where some area theater companies have been forced to close or combine their efforts; a group of Richmond’s young and up and coming artists have announced they are opening their own theater.

Just two years after their inception as a mobile theater company, TheatreLAB will be moving into their own theater space later this year. Appropriately named “The Basement,” TheatreLAB’s new home will be located in the basement at 300 East Broad Street in the heart of Richmond’s downtown theater district. Even the name has a young, “hip” cutting edge-Greenwich Village kind of feel.

Plans for the space are being developed through Storefront for Community Design’s partnership with VCU, and the mOb [Middle of Broad] program. A student team of interior designers, graphic designers, and illustrators, will be overseen by experienced mentors to develop all of the renderings and sketches for the space.

TheatreLAB will kick off their 2014-15 season in the newly renovated venue in October with John Cameron Mitchell’s cult classic rock musical Hedwig And The Angry Inch.

They are in the final stages of filing their 501c3 non-profit paperwork so donations can be tax-deductible. They will be launching their full capital campaign on April 1st.

Deejay Gray, Co-founder and Artistic Director at TheatreLab, who was named to Style Weekly’s Top 40 under 40 in 2013, says “We always affectionately say that TheatreLAB is an organization that aims to ‘play with all of the kids in the sandbox’ through artistic collaboration and community outreach, so moving into The Basement provides us the exciting opportunity to open up a new creative playground to share with our fellow artists here in RVA.”

Managing Director Annie Colpitts adds “We’re very excited to be joining the Arts District as it continues to bloom, and also to be providing Richmond with its first basement performing space. In cities like New York and Chicago, basement theaters are all over the place. But for Richmond, this will be a first!”

Construction will take place over the summer. All monetary and in-kind donation inquiries may be forwarded to Colpitts at colpitts.annie -at- gmail.com.

Petersburg-based theater company Sycamore Rouge announced today it will be shutting down on July 31st.

Petersburg-based theater company Sycamore Rouge announced today it will be shutting down on July 31st. Their last production, Twelfth Night closed last weekend. Their full press release:

Sycamore Rouge will close its doors for good at the end of this month. The professional theatre company will donate its belongings to non-profit organizations in the region, and will grant its funds to a Petersburg community non-profit organization.

Sycamore Rouge had investigated and discussed opportunities with many area theatre groups to continue the work of the theatre on its stage in Old Towne Petersburg. “In the past few months, we explored various opportunities and many partners came forward; however, we ultimately realized that the long-term resources and leadership just didn’t exist to maintain what Sycamore Rouge does,” said kb saine [sic], Producing Artistic Director of Sycamore Rouge.

“While we are sad that there is not a solution in place right now, we are hopeful that other groups may look to the space, stage and theatre infrastructure that we are leaving and build a new live arts opportunity in Old Towne Petersburg,” said saine.

As Sycamore Rouge closes on July 31, saine is equally proud that the company’s remaining items and funds will be donated to important, local community-based organizations. “Over the years, we’ve amassed quite a useful stock of costumes, props and set pieces that we know will be helpful assets for our peer theatre companies. In addition, we hope that our office equipment and business assets will help strengthen other community-based non-profits,” explained saine. “Furthermore, I’m thrilled that our Board chose to ensure that all of our funds will be donated to a significant Petersburg organization,” saine added.

Sycamore Rouge was founded in 2002 and began programming in 2006. Since then, the company has produced hundreds of mainstage plays, smaller productions, classes and other events. “I’m so proud of what all Sycamore Rouge has done in the past seven years — from the contributions to the arts community to the revitalization efforts of Old Towne,” said saine. “We’ve been told so many times what an impact we’ve made on Petersburg, and how our plays and productions have made a difference to people, and that’s the best thing we could hope for,” concluded saine.

The mission of Sycamore Rouge is to use the performing arts to promote creativity, to help revitalize Petersburg’s downtown area, to strengthen the communities we serve through communal arts experiences, to stimulate the hearts and minds of the community, and to educate the community and its children.
